What is a Technical Design Lead?

· The job of a Technical Design Lead is a broad one. What they do varies from team to team and project to project. A Technical Design Lead is responsible for the technical delivery of a project or design. They lead a team whose job is solving a business problem through technology and building software. They will lead, guide, or facilitate the technical direction for a group of developers to meet a project’s goal.

·Expectations of a Design Lead

· As a design lead, the resource can expect to spend much less time on heads down tasks such as coding and development work. A much greater percent of time will be spent in project meetings, collaborating with tech leads on designs, working with EA and PSAs to understand architecture direction, tracking and reporting on project status or progress, and leading or mentoring developers within the delivery team. A design lead will be expected to understand and translate business requirements into technical specifications and present design options to IT or business partners. A design lead may need to work across the organization to design and coordinate a business solution. A design lead will need to effectively communicate design recommendations, impacts of interrelated designs, and business improvement ideas with leadership and colleagues.
